Dear Rotarians and friends

What a joy to be treated to the light relief offered by Martin Clare at our meeting last week. This was certainly enjoyed by all present but particularly for anyone like me who emerged briefly from the tedium of moving house. For those folk weary of my moaning, you will be relieved to know it will all be over by Wednesday!

An important part of the Rotary experience is the development of friendships and connections within and outside Applecross Rotary. Our social activities are the cornerstone of this key aim. Last week we mentioned that we would appreciate feedback from members as to the style and timing of social events that would most suit individuals with the goal to create a calendar of regular, varied events that would maximise the opportunities for everyone’s participation over time. We would appreciate any feedback to Adele or Liz.

On the social topic, please note the cancellation of the Sundowner proposed for this Thursday to enable as many folk as possible to attend the Networking Sundowner co-hosted by Scarborough Rotary and Mama Respond CEO, Erin Hegarty. This will be a great opportunity to hear an update from Erin on their important work. Full details further in this Advocate.

While we are considering saving dates on our calendar, please note the Epic Day of Service on May 17th where we plan on being a part of the river clean up with the other Rotarians from the Rotary Community Group and members of the wider community. We have nominated the area around Deep Water Point towards the Canning and Mount Henry Bridges. Stay tuned for the publicity planned with the City of Melville to promote the day where Rotarians will be clearly seen as people of action.

Later in the year we have agreed with Dalkeith Rotary that we will sell daffodils outside Bunnings Cockburn in support of the Cancer Council on the weekend of August 15 & 16.

Finally, congratulations to Dawn France for putting together an outstanding Grant Application for Federal funds through our local Member for Tangney, Sam Lim. We look forward to a positive response.

Together in action

Margaret Brede

GUEST SPEAKER - Martin Clare
Our guest speaker (and singer), Martin Clare was so entertaining and funny at Applecross Rotary Club on 17th March I forgot to take any notes or even a photo until he was halfway through.

Martin is now 87 but has been singing since he was a boy soprano at the age of 11. When he tried to join the Colchester Essex Choir, the choirmaster told his mother that they had 40 boys already and were full. She begged him to listen to Martin, he auditioned and the choirmaster exclaimed: “We’ve found our lead soprano!”

Of course boys’ soprano voices don’t last forever and Martin’s voice broke at 13. Luckily, he took recordings of himself before that happened and we were able to hear his beautiful clear singing voice of that era.

Martin didn’t sing again for another 18 years but when he emigrated to Perth, someone suggested he should appear on Perth New Faces. Harry Bluck recommended that he receive training with the WA State Opera as it was known then. He trained with the opera’s director, Giuseppe, who lived in Mt Pleasant, which led to Martin performing for 13 years with the WA Opera Company and Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

At the time, Martin worked with Telstra and was given a job which required him to travel around WA, so his singing career was on hold in the city, but he entertained many community groups and at hotels in the country.

Martin was a good friend of David Helfgott, who used to accompany him on piano at the Mundaring Weir Hotel on Sundays. Martin had to tell David quite firmly that David should stick to playing the piano and not try to sing along too!

He attributes his fine singing voice to good genes inherited from his mother and to never having smoked cigarettes, so is a big hit with teachers when he has been asked about his success and singing longevity by students in the classroom.

Martin sang La Donna Mobile by Rigoletto in Italian and La Serenata by Tosti, and received generous applause from members. President Margaret thanked Martin and said his presentation and singing was a delight.

In autumn each year South of Perth Yacht Club host “Cruising Butterflies” to take children with life-long health issues onto the Swan River on members boats to enjoy a morning of fun on the water.  This is a partnership with
Kiind (a support organization from Perth Children’s Hospital) and  sponsors including Applecross and Melville Rotary Clubs.

Kiind invite about 150 children along with their parents, siblings and carers to attend this special day  for the children that also gives their families a short respite from the 24-hour a day caring duty.

After the morning on the water there will be a sausage sizzle lunch,  live entertainment and special guests and events.  The day will wind up early in the afternoon.

Applecross Rotary, as in previous years, have been tasked with the BBQ duties, cooking and serving sausages in a bun (supplied by SoPYC) and to organize car parking, both inside SoPYC and on the Heathcote Lower Land.  We have been asked to bring our Rotary branded marquees to hold the registration and welcome desks and to also bring along our Rotary banners.

We will need a team of at least 6-8 for the BBQ (10.00am to 1.00pm), 7- 8 for parking (7.30am to 9.00am) and several for set up and pull down of our infrastructure.

Please note the date and watch out for the roster so that you can volunteer.

Kenn's Musings
NEW ZEALAND’s Deep South… a bit of a TRAVEL story.

Returning last Sunday, Peta and I had a wonderful 10 days in the Deep South of NZ, and can thoroughly recommend to any with thoughts of ‘local’ international travel.

We started out in Queenstown, a relative 8 hours travel from here, and with a 5 hour time difference to WA time. Flying in thru the valleys, almost reaching out and touching the ranges on approach to Queenstown A/P,  was a surreal experience, as were the mountains that dominate that area.
We hired a lil Toyota hybrid, and with petrol around $3 NZ a litre it served us well, travelling to Dunedin and staying at the incredibly Scottish Larnach Castle, set up high with wonderful gardens overlooking the Dunedin bay and hinterlands. Recommend.
Return journey via the southern route, towards Invercargill and some of the most attractive and intensive farming/grazing lands, alongside rivers, lakes and mountains before having some more time in Queenstown.

It is rather spread out town along the lake and under the mountains, with roadworks on the main entry/exit route making traffic worse than a trip down south late in the day of a long weekend!! SHO—KING. The only downer of the trip. How the locals put up with it, I cannot fathom.

Meal choices and quality really good, and service excellent.

A visit to nearby Arrow Town, and a sunset lake/dinner cruise on an old steam boat were highlites.

We then travelled up over the mountains to Wanaka, staying with friends for 4 days, and truly enjoying the beauty of the little town set amongst the really high mountains.
Again great food, with a highlight the visit to the Wanaka A&P Show, which attracts about 40,000 visitors to its over 1600 site displays. Thinking JacFest… with our 160 sites!! All the regular country show features, but including .. I think… the world’s only major race for Jack Russell doggies.. thousands watched from the fence lines, 100 dogs taking off en mass chasing a lure towed behind a Policewoman on horseback,  then heading every which way distracted by whatever.. so comical.

Also a local strong man and woman comp … neither Peta or I were tempted to enter! Some of those Mauri bods are humungous.
A long trip home via Brisbane, but it was worth it.

We are definitely returning as we only scratched the surface of some of the most beautiful sightseeing, fabo food and great hospitality on offer in the Deep South.

Can recommend!

Kenn.

Metronet
Metronet

Don Briggs will present what was planned, proposed, laid out, and how eventually the Metronet project commenced. When Labor came into power, the Roe Highway road link work to a tunnel into the Fremantle Port was halted, and new planned structures were put into place.

Metronet was first proposed as a set of rail infrastructure projects in December 2012 by the Opposition Labor Party as an election commitment for the forthcoming 2013 State election.

In August 2015, the Labor Party proposed a modified, staged version of Metronet as an election commitment for the 2017 election. The plan prioritised completion of the Airport line, the Joondalup line extension to Yanchep, the Armadale line extension to Byford, and the Thornlie line extension. That was expanded to reincorporate a rail line to Ellenbrook and Karnup station by December 2016. After the election of the McGowan Government, the Metronet multi-agency team was formed in 2017 to deliver the commitments.
