Dear Rotarians and friends

I hope everyone has enjoyed a safe and relaxing Easter weekend as our 2026 Rotary year proceeds at pace.

Melville City Council are great supporters of our annual Jacaranda Festival so as planning gets underway for November 15 it was very helpful to meet with City representatives last week to discuss ways in which we can streamline the way in which we work together.

It is also exciting to anticipate the developing connections with Melville and Attadale Rotary clubs as we build our relationship with the Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce. Stay tuned for more news on this front.

Yours in active Rotary

Margaret Brede

Guest Speaker - Citizens Advice Bureau
Nadia (Lawyer Citizens Advice Bureau) and host Dr Barry Mendelawitz

Member Barry Mendelawitz introduced our guest speaker Nadia from Citizens Advice Bureau. Barry was well suited to the role of host as he and his wife Margaret have volunteered at the Citizens Advice Bureau office for the last 22 years. Currently they are involved in a mediation position, mostly involving couples’ relationship breakdowns.

CAB is a low-cost legal advice service on a wide range of issues but Nadia, who is a lawyer, chose to speak to us about the importance of preparing your will. Nadia stressed the importance of having all the legal documentation correct and for the will to be completed without errors, because this will lead to many problems and delays, which affect the family and legal processing and dissemination of a person’s last wishes.

Nadia told us that a will must be signed by two witnesses at the same time, who cannot be beneficiaries or spouses, and to appoint an executor to manage the will. Ensure that there will be enough money before bequests to cover debts.

Don’t strike through any wording which is incorrect, but write out the will again, and put the will away in a safe place, ensuring that your executor or family know where to find it. Destroy any old wills you have made before. Be extra careful if there are any divorces or remarriages in the mix, because every will can be challenged.

If you don’t have a will and die intestate, the State Administration Tribunal will administer the will, resulting in long delays and possible family breakdowns due to distribution of assets.

Probate is always required for property and assets. It is also advisable to have to hand a signed Power of Attorney form, Enduring Power of Attorney, a Landgate form and an Advanced Health Directive.

Owing to the legal complexity of a will, and to ensure that your wishes are met, it is best to meet with a reputable lawyer, or contact the CAB.

Barry thanked Nadia for such a comprehensive presentation and encouraged us to keep a close watch on our wills as family dynamics can change and don’t scribble your last wishes on the back of an envelope!

Rotary Announces Immediate Ban on Sausage Sizzles Australia-wide

In case you missed it, on April 1st Rotary South Pacific announced: ‘Rotary bans sausage sizzles Australia-wide’. They were pleased to share the following day it was all an April fools joke!

Why did Rotary South Pacific run this campaign? The purpose of the campaign is a tongue-in-cheek way of drawing attention to what Rotary is most known for in Australia. With the public’s attention, we can direct the conversation to what Rotary achieves beyond the barbecue.

A recent Rotary International survey shows that awareness of Rotary is high however only 35% of Australians knew what Rotary actually does! The survey also showed that people who personally know a Rotarian have a significantly more positive perception so this means Rotarians themselves are the biggest influence on Rotary's public image.

Research also points out that Rotary does so many different things that the public gets confused about what Rotary is and members often struggle to "tell the Rotary story"simply and consistently.

So what this means for Rotary clubs is that we need to tell a Rotary story, bring younger members into projects, highlight community impact, recognise volunteers and build partnerships (like our recent Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce engagement).

We have an opportunity to tell a Rotary story of where the money goes from the donations we collect at the Perth Makers Market.

In autumn each year South of Perth Yacht Club host “Cruising Butterflies” to take children with life-long health issues onto the Swan River on members boats to enjoy a morning of fun on the water.  This is a partnership with
Kiind (a support organization from Perth Children’s Hospital) and  sponsors including Applecross and Melville Rotary Clubs.

Kiind invite about 150 children along with their parents, siblings and carers to attend this special day  for the children that also gives their families a short respite from the 24-hour a day caring duty.

After the morning on the water there will be a sausage sizzle lunch,  live entertainment and special guests and events.  The day will wind up early in the afternoon.

Applecross Rotary, as in previous years, have been tasked with the BBQ duties, cooking and serving sausages in a bun (supplied by SoPYC) and to organize car parking, both inside SoPYC and on the Heathcote Lower Land.  We have been asked to bring our Rotary branded marquees to hold the registration and welcome desks and to also bring along our Rotary banners.
