President's Notes

As my year as President draws to a close, I thought I would reflect on some of the major events of Rotary year 2021/22.

The year started with a bang, as PP Ray passed the baton. Close to 100 Rotarians, past and present, attended the 50th anniversary of our wonderful Club, which was established on 2 June 1971. The evening was enjoyed by all.

One of our goals for the year was to collaborate, and work closer with local Rotary clubs. To this end, two joint meetings were held with Booragoon Rotary Club. Attadale Rotary Club provide volunteers for our Jacaranda Festival, and also now regularly volunteer members for our Perth Makers Market parking activities, which raises significant funds for the community.

2021/22 was indeed a milestone year, and we celebrated the 21st birthday of our Clubs nameplate.

This wonderful community event, with over 100 volunteers, and wonderful support of the City of Melville, Lotterywest and our sponsors, has endured the passage of time. A special thank you to all.

Our annual Arts Show, a joint event with Melville Rotary Club was again a success.
Thank you to all members who contributed.

Our Club has raised well over $500,000 from these activities in the last decade.

Our Club’s guest speaker is of immense value. A great example is Erin Hegarty who spoke of Mama Respond’s activities and vision for the disabled in Noonkopir, Kenya. PP Chris Whelan took a lead role with the result that a new Ablutions Block for Disabled Students is now being built. With Rotary’s support over USD85,000 has been raised for this special project. In a new initiative, Chris organized a joint meeting with Washington Rotary Club (WRC). WRC have pledged a further USD15,000 for the fit out of the new facility. Well done Chris!

During the year we welcomed three new life members, namely,
Bruce James, John Henderson and Doug Telfer. They have all made a wonderful contribution to Rotary and our Club.

AG Kenn's notes
Peta and I caught up with Helen and John Henderson for lunch yesterday, at their new residence at 7 Dean St, Claremont.
Lovely to see them happily settled in their well appointed and spacious ‘Village’ setting, and finding them both well and happy.
Great opportunity for a Sundowner come the warmer months, and certainly both look forward to catching up soon with their many Rotary friends.

I attended the District Governors Changeover at Rockingham on Friday night, and say thank you to Pat Schraven for her busy contribution this year, and welcome in Ric McDonald as our last DG for 9465.

What a thrill it was to have Chris Whelan named as District 9465 Rotarian of the Year, the DG’s special citation for an overall contribution to Rotary during 2021/2.
Well done Chris, and certainly a worthy recognition for the depth of Rotary work that you take on.
Pat will present at our Changeover.
Chris also received a special Appreciation Award for his general Rotary duties!
Double well done to Chris!!
Attadale and Melville were the joint winners of the DG’s Special Club Achievement Awards, both from our Zone, so well done to them.

John and Melody Kevan also attended and it was great to catch up with them again. John is towards finishing his fourth booK!! Can recommend reading, great plots and well told. John would make a great Speaker, especially considering his recently found status!

Club Project Utility.
I have given the 2wd diesel Nissan Navara Traytop a bit of a run and can say that it should suit our community needs admirably for the years to come.
It is a manual with a bench seat and runs beautifully, with a tow bar and trailer ready.
It will be parked up for inspection in the morning!

We will set up a ‘hire’ agreement for either other Rotary Club use, or limited private use, with the aim of covering off on the fixed costs to AxR.
The vehicle is covered automatically under Rotary Insurance, like our trailer and other assets, and has a standard excess  … I am advised by John Honey, District Insurance Officer… of $500 for Club use, with a $1000 deductible if not under the control of a Club member. ( I will send in a formal request re confirmation of ‘non Rotarian use’ as John was a little unsure of how the Insurer handles such claims)

New Rotary year, new Club Presidents, and back into AG duties again from mid July.

A Special note: Well done Ray for doing a fantastic weekly Advocate format, no easy task. One of the really dedicated activities ‘someone has to do’!  A great effort.

AND….
DON’T FORGET ‘COMEDY FOR CHARITY’, 19TH AND 20TH AUGUST, at the  CoM Main Hall. $30/ticket, joint Rotary event, TRYBOOKINGS opens on the 1st of July.

Best of winter cheers..
Kenn

Stitches of Hope Sleeping Bags Keep Homeless Warm
For several years now, we have partnered with WA charity Street Connect, to buy sleeping bags for homeless people in WA. Last year over 80 sleeping bags were donated, and many ended up in Mandurah and Bunbury where there was high demand.

“Stitches of Hope” is a registered charity that was established by Swan Rotarians Kay and John Eva. It is based in Cambodia and the sleeping bags are made in a local village, and pay a living wage to the workers. Kay and John get them delivered to WA where they can be purchased for $50, and donated to Street Connect. So your tax-deductible donation through RAWCS sends money to Cambodia for village development, and keeps homeless people warm in WA. Pretty good deal!

We launched the 2022 Appeal a few weeks, and sold 36 sleeping bags. Great start - well done!

Please chat to Ian Fairnie if you’d like to participate.

Easiest way to find contact details for other members and to check-out club event details.  Ray Philp is available if you need to assistance to set up.
