Dear Rotarians and friends

What a day we had! The 25th Anniversary Applecross Rotary Jacaranda Festival is done and dusted. It was truly an amazing day. We were blessed with cooler weather which meant the efforts of our team from Applecross Rotary, together with the invaluable support of other Rotary clubs and community groups, were rewarded with huge crowds throughout the day. Our patrons kept arriving, kept staying, kept eating, kept shopping and enjoying the fantastic entertainment right through until the close at 3.30.

The huge team effort only came together through the calm, dedicated efforts over many months of our event Leader, Chris Whelan, to culminate in Sunday’s resounding success.

One group that has provided outstanding support over the years both to Applecross Rotary and to the stallholders is the Waylen Bay Sea Scouts. Their teams of workers are invaluable during the early morning set up and the challenging pack down at the end. Stall holders expressed their gratitude to the willing, capable assistance provided by the teams of WBSSs which many said they believed to be unique to the Jacaranda Festival. It was a pleasure to see their long-term commitment to supporting our community event acknowledged as the worthy recipients of the Mal Taylor Award. This highlights the culture and spirit of the Jacaranda Festival.

As we bask in the warm afterglow of Sunday’s achievements there are a few items of business to consider before we conclude our Rotary year with our Christmas Party at Bad Apple on 7th December.

Let’s keep our community connections alive,

Margaret Brede

What A Day! JacFest2025

Thanks to a number of people we have a lot of photo and video record of our 25th Anniversary of the Jacaranda Festival.  We will get it organised to share with everyone for the next Advocate including a summary of our informal debrief at tomorrow's breakfast meeting while everything is fresh in mind. Chris Whelan has requested by email for any observations, ideas and feedback, no need for any congratulatory content just guidance about how to make JF26 even better.

Click here for Warwick Smith's video that he has quickly put together for our viewing.   We are very appreciative of Warwick's efforts and Chris has offered him the role for life if he wishes! smiley

Final Perth Makers Market for 2025

This market is traditionally one of our busiest of the year, so hopefully we’ll all have recovered from our huge Jacaranda Festival effort and be ready to regroup for one more successful Perth Makers Market parking fundraiser to close out 2025.

Please let Lorri know your availability as soon as possible so she doesn’t have to chase responses.

I know this is an especially busy time of year, but the saying “many hands make light work” has never been more true—particularly when it comes to setting up and taking down the infrastructure essential to the success of this activity.

Even if you can spare just a couple of hours on Saturday morning for the setup, or an hour or two on Sunday for setup or pack-down, every bit helps lighten the load for the team.

Let’s make a special effort to finish our 2025 Perth Makers Market fundraising program on a high note.

Former Premier/ Author

Brian Thomas Burke is a former Labor Premier of Western Australia (1983 – 1988) and Australian Ambassador to Ireland and the Holy See (1988 -1991).

Some years after leaving office, Burke was charged with misusing his travelling allowance and was sent to prison. As soon as he learned of the “double dipping”, all allowances were repaid in full.

Burke returned from Ireland, where he was Australian Ambassador, to defend his reputation at the royal commission.

His jailing had a devastating impact on his life and on his family, particularly his wife, Sue, who he met at school and to whom he has been married for more than 50 years. They have six children and 19 grandchildren.

Burke recently published his autobiography, A Tumultuous Life, which deals in detail with his colourful and often controversial life and career.
