Our guest at last weeks meeting was District Governor-elect (DGE) Patricia Schraven.
Thanks to Chris Whelan, who took the opportunity to invite Pat to our club when he met her at the District conference, we were able to get to know Pat with her presentation of the "Life and Times" of herself. This was an unique opportunity as the usual way most members meet the District Governor (DG) is the official visit sometime during their year as DG.
Pat introduced us to her family and working life. Pat worked in the mining industry for the past 20 years before retiring last year. Her roles have been predominately in Human Resources however has always taken an active interest in health and safety programs.
Pat is a Past Club President, District Chair of the Four Way Speech Contest and now an Australian Rotary Health Board Member.
Applecross Rotary look forward to working with Pat and wish her every success in her year as District Governor 2021-2022.

Our 50th Anniversary celebrations and Club Changeover event planning has begun with a visit to a potential venue last Friday evening. The potential dates for the event are Tuesday 6th or Wednesday 7th July 2021 so mark them in your calendar. Liz, Lorri, David, Val and myself spent an enjoyable night checking out the venue with the only issue was David getting upset because Liz's icecream was bigger than his.
This week's FOOTY MARGINS winner was Julie Hebble with the points difference for the Fremantle / GWS game at Optus Stadium being 31 points.
It was sad news last Tuesday evening when I was advised that the Greenbatch Foundation had been put into liquidation. There were a number of reasons that caused the liquidation with one of the main factors being COVID that delayed the start of the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) and the CDS throughput. As early as this year major events were still being cancelled due to the uncertainty of COVID lockdowns and conditions to operate.
We have been just able to get back into schools to engage them with the Foundation's Schools Education Program. We held our first assembly presentation at the Melville Primary School a couple of weeks ago that was very well received by over 700 students.
In the picture above are some of the student environmental group, the school principal and the Greenbatch presenter.
The RotaryWA - Greenbatch Foundation alliance group are meeting on Tuesday to discuss our options with a strong focus on how we can keep the schools education program going as well as the Type 1 and 2 plastic recycling initiative.
There is still a huge potential for raising funds through the Container Deposit Scheme as demonstrated by club member George Mavros. George is still going to collect the CDS containers from his apartments until we revisit our options and this morning I transported his collection to the Scouts refund point at Coburn Central and received $22.60 to take the total refunds to $379.
Lots of small donations add up and I encourage members to continue to collect their CDS containers however at the moment we cannot collect the non CDS containers.
I am looking forward to the Applecross Rotary Youth Event this Wednesday with two terrific guest speakers in Greg Hire and Michael Frederick (what a game on Sunday!). Well done again to our Youth Director Logan for organising this event and encourage all of our members and friends to support this event. We will also have the opportunity to promote the Melville City Rotaract Club and the Rotary youth programs Rotaract and RYLA. The event will be held at WINNACOTT RESERVE, 33 Winnacott St, Willagee at 5.30pm.
