President's  Notes
Peter McEWEN

We are now well and truly into spring with many beautiful days, and sneezing and itchy eyes for those of us who are hay fever sufferers.
This week’s wildflower photographs were taken by Chris Wheelan during a recent trip to the Mullewa area.

Many thanks to Chris and we look forward to receiving your “spring” photos.

IPP Ray and myself attended the opening of the Melville Cockburn Chamber Commerce (MCCC) new offices by the City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett.

The MCCC board accepted our proposal in principle, in conjunction with the Cockburn Rotary Club, to provide annual business, youth and apprentice awards. We are planning to do a presentation to the board this week. At the meeting, we also caught up with Phillip Charles and Monica from “Feed it Forward”. They will be speaking at our 12 October 2021 meeting.

A special thanks to Gordon Dunbar for organizing our Club’s Guest Speaker Programme.

Last week we heard from Stephen Moir, Group CEO, MTA WA who spoke on the future of the electric car. Stephen advised that battery charging, life and replacement cost, as well as Government subsidies, remain key factors that need to be addressed.

This week we welcome Carrick Robinson, CEO Perth Children’s Foundation, who will speak on WA’s first children’s hospice.  This will no doubt be a moving subject.

On the social front, don’t forget our Club’s “curry night”, at Kenn and Peta’s home this Wednesday 15 September 2021. This will be a night to be savored.

Items of interest

1.  Activity at the Rotary (Kenns) storage unit

This morning Cindy W, Peter M, Kenn W and Chris W spent some time checking and recording the Club's signage used for the Perth Makers Market, Rotary Jacaranda Festival and general Rotary promotion.  Cindy has volunteered to do an audit on our marketing and signage assets to bring them back up to a professional standard and to recommend new material to maximise our promotional opportunities at events like our meeting venue, PMM and Jacfest.

Seen at the footy last Friday evening ...

Unfortunately Ray picked the wrong team again and sat through Melbourne flogging Geelong.  Peta Williams jumped at the chance for the spare ticket being a MELBOURNE supporter, resulting in Ray's left arm absorbing Peta's many celebrations throughout the game.

I believe President Peter was also at the game supporting Geelong.

Invitation to Ben Morton's Service Club Sundowner

Ben Morton MP is very pleased to invite you and all Rotary Club of Applecross members for his annual Service Club Sundowner on Wednesday, 13 October 2021.

This event is a great opportunity to catch up, share ideas and recognise the work that all service clubs do to improve people’s lives.

Attadale Rotary's New Meeting Venue
After a Club review, Attadale has selected the Swan Yacht Club as its new venue, along with a change of meeting night, now Wednesday, and which Peta and I attended last week.
It was a really happy evening, with lots of competitions and fun, plenty of chatting and a great meal to boot.
John Sharpe, as President, is keen to work in with other cluster Clubs, and we could do worse than plan for a joint meeting with them after new year.
Attadale are strong supporters of our Jacaranda Festival as a manpower resource on the day.

SOME JACFEST UPDATES.

* Our Lottery West Grant was approved last Wed and we now await City of Melville stated Covid Event Approval for the Grant to be released. Thanks George for seeing the application process through again.

* Our regular SUNDOWNER on Thursday, 30th September at MLA Kim Giddens Electorate Office in Applecross is intended to have small business in the Village hear of plans for our 21st JacFest, and give them an appreciation for the work that goes into this annual street festival showcasing their shopping strip.
It will be great to have a good turn up of Members and friends, so more info will follow.

* We plan for JacFest 21 to be a truly ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY event, with GO2CUPS providing re-usable meal setting equipment for the food zone and take away coffee, and the City of Melville providing a Grant of almost $3000 to support this, plus FOGO bins with volunteers to help those attending make better re-usable, recyclable, FOGO and general rubbish decisions.
All good news in terms of our JacFest setting standards for future community events.
