Dear Rotarians and friends

What a beautiful day for a Market! Perth Makers Market was the place to be this morning with big crowds arriving early and staying on. We might have been slightly short on worker numbers but big on worker energy and enthusiasm. Well done one and all, particularly those involved in the lengthy set up and pack up. I hope our takings reflected your efforts.

Another big thank you to Hamish and Chris Turner for hosting a delightful Sundowner last Thursday in the Dining Room at their beautiful new apartments. It was a perfect location with an amazing outlook to complement the scintillating Rotarian company. Thank you, Hamish and Chris.

Let’s try to make a focus on our social gatherings. It is so important to build our relationships within Applecross Rotary, particularly as we welcome and get to know our newer members.

Yours in friendship,

Margaret Brede

Guest Speaker -  Brightwater At Home
Bre Rasmussen is the manager of the Allied Health Professionals division at Brightwater At Home, and presented to us last Tuesday together with Adriana Filippou, Brightwater’s Community Engagement and Events Organiser.

Brightwater has been part of the WA community since 1901 and provides residential aged care and rehabilitation services, but Bre chiefly spoke about home care.

Their team includes care workers, nurses and therapists and each home care package is designed to cater towards an individual person’s needs. Brightwater offers help with cleaning, shopping, driving to appointments and personal care.

A home care package for a person over 65 or vulnerable people over 50 starts with an aged care assessment, which can be arranged online, by telephone or through a referral from a GP.

There are eight care levels with the basic one offering assistance over two to three services, which can be domestic help, home maintenance and gardening or meal delivery. Prices for each service are heavily regulated and range from $10,000 to $78,000 a year. A care partner will be appointed and can work with the client to determine their requirements.

An up to 12-weeks transitional care program is also available after a client’s hospitalisation to home.

Bre allowed plenty of time for questions and there were quite a few from the floor. President Margaret pointed out that younger members Sue and Aaron were possibly not so invested in the topic, but the room as a whole listened with rapt attention. Several members had personal experience with arranging care needs for a family member and were interested to hear of changes taking place in the aged care system.

YESTERDAY

Another excellent Makers Market on what could only be described as a perfect-weather day. The crowds kept coming, with the usual morning surge setting the pace. I spoke with several visitors heading to and from the Upper CP—some from Germany and the UK—who were amazed by the location, the quality of the stalls, and the generosity shown toward Applecross Rotary for our orderly and supportive parking management. And what a wonderfully multicultural mix of people.

Well done to everyone on another busy day and a job well executed.

I did some rough arithmetic on the team who stayed behind to bump out our assets and return everything to storage. Would you believe it?
The average age of the five-person crew was almost 80—yes, 80!
And after a long day in the trenches, we were still there at the end doing the heavy lifting. There is a clear need for change here, and some younger support would make a world of difference.

There are absolutely no prizes for dying on the job wink

A few challenges emerged in the Lower Carpark as we reach the end of summer, with construction vehicles leaving large sections of the lowerlands sandy and stripped of grass. This made parking management particularly tricky, and despite careful coordination, four vehicles still needed assistance after becoming bogged. Unfortunately, this issue is likely to worsen until we get some rain, and the area will require attention from the City of Melville before the next markets in early April.

DISTRICT MEMBERSHIP GRANT UPDATE

Under Membership Director Adele, we have submitted a joint application (with Melville RC) for a District 9423 Membership Grant to support a partnership initiative with the Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce (MCCC). Both Applecross Rotary and Melville Rotary are members of the Chamber.

Each Club will contribute $1,000 alongside the District Grant. The project aims to strengthen our relationship with the Chamber so local businesses can support our existing projects, propose new ones, and experience the value of deeper charitable engagement with our communities.

The intention is twofold:
• increase business involvement and awareness of Rotary’s work
• build Rotary membership as a natural outcome

This will not be a short-term project, but we will monitor interest and progress as it develops. The plan is to culminate in a joint MCCC/Rotary Volunteers Expo in October.

This initiative also aligns with the work of the Rotary Community Group under David Barton and the activities of Melville Rotary within the Chamber.

I attended a well-supported Chamber breakfast last Wednesday, and the key executives expressed strong enthusiasm for working with us.

Each Club—including potentially Attadale and hopefully Cockburn—will need to appoint a business member as a Champion for the initiative. Both AxR and MR appear to have this in hand.

Well done to Adele for driving this. We expect District approval within the next week so we can begin. The Board has a copy of the submission.

Kenn.

Cyril Ayris established a prize-winning reputation as a painstaking, hard-working journalist who guarded his sources and covered any story, big or small with the same meticulous detail. In his book, Chameleon, reporter at large, Ayris tells his life story with typical good humour; a boy growing up in England and his trek across the world with his family to settle in Australia. His story begins in tough post war England and the grim winter of 1947 which made the Ayris family decide to emigrate to Tasmania.
