Dear Rotarians and friends

WE were delighted to extend our connections with other Rotarians and community groups last Tuesday afternoon. Thanks to the Applecross Rotary folk who attended the ‘meet and greet’ with the Premier at the South of Perth Yacht Club, hosted by our good friend and local MLA, Kim Giddens. We were joined there by representatives of Melville Rotary, Kiis, Sailability WA, Sailing On and Waylen Bay Sea Scouts. It was a heart-warming occasion to share in the recognition of such a range of worthy volunteer groups.

It was extremely fortuitous that we were able to hear from Drs Anita Bourke and Jennie Connaughton about the Uujan Project in Kolkata. Not only was Pushpa (Dalkeith Rotary) able to organise our guests at short notice, we had an unexpected vacancy in our speaker schedule.

Michele and Clive do an amazing job creating the interesting and varied programme, but at their prompting, there has been some discussion about the structure of our meeting schedule to, amongst other issues, enable the timely inclusion of topical speakers.

We hope to canvas our members in coming weeks with a view to trialling a slightly varied arrangement for meeting formats from 2027.

Yours in Rotary

Margaret Brede

The Ujjan Project – A Rotary Global Grant in Action

The Rotary Club of Dalkeith, together with CINI Australia and their Rotary partners in Kolkata, is progressing an important new Global Grant: The Ujjan Project – “Keeping Them in School.” Led locally by PDG Dr S. Pushpalingam and Dr Jennie Connaughton Director CINI Australia. The project focuses on supporting vulnerable children from Rambagan and Sonagachi, two of Kolkata’s largest red‑light districts.

What the Project Aims to Achieve

The Ujjan Project is designed to prevent exploitation—including child marriage, abuse, child labour, slavery, and the ongoing invisibility of the underprivileged. By keeping at‑risk children in school, the project helps adolescents grow into adults with dignity, self‑worth, and the opportunity to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

This work is grounded in the long-standing expertise of CINI (Child in Need Institute), an organisation with more than 52 years of ethical, community‑based empowerment for women and children. Rotary partners in Kolkata bring deep local knowledge and hands‑on involvement.

Why This Project Fits Rotary’s Mission

The Ujjan Project aligns strongly with Rotary’s Areas of Focus, particularly:

  • Maternal and Child Health

  • Education and Literacy

  • Economic and Community Development

It meets all Global Grant requirements by:

  • Responding to a clearly identified community need

  • Ensuring active participation from the benefiting community

  • Building long‑term, sustainable impact

  • Establishing measurable goals and accountability

Current Progress

  • Community assessment: underway

  • Budget: awaiting finalisation

  • Engagement: approaching Rotary clubs and external partners

What They Are Seeking

  • USD $75,000

  • Two‑year project commitment

  • No fixed deadline, but early support strengthens momentum

Why Support This Global Grant?

This project represents a genuine Rotary opportunity to create lasting change. It passes the Four‑Way Test, strengthens international goodwill, and reflects Rotary’s evolving annual themes:

  • 2023–24: Create Hope in the World

  • 2024–25: Make Magic Happen

  • 2025–26: Unite for Good

  • 2026–27: Create Lasting Impact

The Ujjan Project embodies Service Above Self, offering clubs and individuals a meaningful way to contribute to the wellbeing of children who deserve safety, education, and a future.

An excellent presentation looking for support from our club.

RYE Essi Mustonen Report
Hi from Essi

The last week has been busy and I have enjoyed every moment. My year 12 ball was last Friday and it was lovely! Really different to my Finnish ball. In Finland we learn ball room dances for half an year and all of your relatives and friends come watch us dance. I love seeing the differences and I enjoyed every second of the night.

On Saturday morning we left for North West Safari. I have been waiting for this trip for a long time and it has been amazing so far!

We have seen beautiful Karijini and so many water falls!! It is so cool to spend time with people from all over the world and our lovely Rotary committee members including Graeme.

I am really looking forward for swimming with whale sharks which we will do when we head to Coral bay next week!

Thank you all for letting me be part of Applecross Rotary club and to have this amazing experiance! I am really grateful!

BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP WITH OUR BUSINESS COMMUNITY

More than 10 years ago, I had a chat with Greg Brindle ( of The Good Grocer ) about seeking sponsorship from local business for the work that Applecross Rotary does in our community.
As a result, Greg gathered 3 other businesses who were supportive of our efforts and we set about building that relationship so that it was ongoing and enabled the business to become part of our community success story.

The Good Grocer, Mont Realty, Pharmacy777 and Ross North Homes make up this group.

For our newer members, it is important to recognise that being able to work with local business,  to negotiate the ‘whats in it for me’ benefit which drives the ongoing commitment, to work with them each year for best outcomes, truly is the reason that those 10 years have yielded around $160k of community ‘give back’ for AxR.
AND, IMPORTANTLY, the relationship continues and thus our capacity for community relevance is sustained.

At last Board it was approved to present each of the businesses with a Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of their outstanding support that they have provided to AxR.

A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WHICH ROTARY CAN BUILD ON.

Part of the reason behind our current push to establish a long term, sustainable relationship with the Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce, in a catchment area of 20,000 businesses,  with its almost 300 members and another almost 1500 on its mailing list, directly relates to the success we have had with our club sponsors.
For our sponsors, this is a flag they can fly to help generate their social licence in a very competitive world of business: their responsible give back.
It can be a real ‘win win’ for both the business and Rotary, certainly giving us a deeper reach into a key part of the broader community.
This is also an important part of our 3 local Rotary clubs, Ax, Mel and Attadale becoming joint sponsors of a Business Award on Thurs, 21st May at the MCCC Business Awards function at the South of Perth Yacht Club.
Building relationships means making commitments, and this is planned to get the MCCC and its community alongside what are keen to develop: working together for better community outcomes.
Early days but with our 3 clubs, ( hopefully also including Cockburn R )working together, who knows what this could look like in another 10 years!

Given the difficulty Rotary, and many other volunteer groups are having in sustaining membership. .. perhaps read ‘sustaining relevance’, then this must gain our best support.

My thoughts,
Kenn.

Stitches of Hope Sleeping Bags

to see Ian for your sleeping bag donation.  Winter is well and truly here!

Keeping Warm while Sleeping Rough

For some years Applecross Rotary has been asking members to donate a sleeping bag to keep street kids warm in winter.

These bags are made in Cambodia in a project hosted by Kay and John Eva from Rotary Club of Midland Swan Valley.  The local people have learned to make the bags and these are “sold" in Perth, to Rotarians and friends, and donated on to Perth Rotary Project “Passages” and Anglicare Street Connect.

This process, from the villages in Cambodia to the streets of Perth, is managed by Kay and John.  All we are asked to do is donate $50 for a sleeping bag to delivered to Passages or Street Connect and Ian Fairnie will make sure it happens.  The donations are tax-deductible.

STILL PLENTY OF GAPS IN ROSTER, PLEASE COMMIT TO A TIME TO ASSIST.

Greetings all

Its approaching    “…..that time of the year again….”
The Westfield Shopping Centre has once again been booked to host the show.
Dates:    7 - 14 June 2026
I have attached both the 2025 and 2026 rosters.

  1. 2025 – detailing members / days and times spent and a photo..
  2. 2026 - blank – to be filled in..

The 2025 detail would serve as a reminder of your input last year.
Also assist in nominating convenient days / times for this year’s roster.

Additional information is clearly indicated for each day and this really remains unchanged for last year.
Each year I “tweak” the detail and so by now its refined and accurate.
I have the keys to the Freo Men’s Shed which serves as the storeroom for all the display items.

Would appreciate your response indicating attendance.

Many thanks
Hamish
