Dear Rotarians

There is never a dull moment in a Rotary week!

We had a productive Board Meeting on Tuesday evening via Zoom. I am pleased t advise that the Board committed to support the Stitches of Hope program as per last year’s donation and we will pursue the structure of our support for Dalkeith Rotary’s initiative with the Child in Need India organisation. For the benefit of newer members, I would like to confirm that all Applecross Rotarians are welcome to link into the Board meeting via TEAMS and the Board would be appreciative of all input to our considerations.

On Thursday I was fortunate to join John Kelly in a visit to the annual camp for the students, mentors and supporters of the Wheatbelt and Beyond Youth Mentoring  program. It was great to get a feel for the valuable contribution enjoyed by the students. Karen Strange and Janine Dayman keep us well-informed of the progress of the organisation so it was a privilege to see them in action with the students. We congratulate them on their hard work to create such an amazing experience for the students in bringing them all together for this camp. Our on-going financial support of the program is much appreciated by all involved with WBYM.

On Friday I was collected Essi on her return from the Northwest Safari and, once again, what a fantastic experience for these inbound exchange students. It was a very emotional farewell for many of the students with plenty of tears and hugs that showed what a wonderful time they had enjoyed. Graeme Fardon and his team are certainly to be congratulated on such an outstanding success and for surviving the experience with 30 lively, enthusiastic teenagers!

Hopefully it has been a relaxing weekend for all the adults involved with providing these invaluable opportunities to the students involved. We look forward to as many volunteers as possible to join the Epic Day of Service next Saturday 16th May, meeting at 9.00am on Jeff Joseph Reserve, Applecross.

Yours with Rotary in Action

Margaret Brede

Epic Day of Service is almost here!

16 MAY

On this day, Rotary, Rotaract and Interact Clubs across the South Pacific (and globally!) will be working on projects that support communities. The special part? When all volunteer on the same day, the impact becomes epic.  Projects vary by location, but all are designed to support local needs.

Join Applecross Rotary members, families, friends, and community volunteers as we help clean up the beautiful Swan River foreshore from Canning Bridge to Jeff Joseph Reserve. This much‑loved walking and cycling path is the perfect place to enjoy some gentle exercise, spend quality time with family and friends, meet new people, and make a real difference to our local environment and community.

Meet at Jeff Joseph Reserve Applecross at 9am Saturday 16th May at the AxR gazebo.

or advise President Margaret at our breakfast meeting or mobile 0409 687 984 if you will be attending.

GUEST SPEAKER: Eric Hartanto

Eric Hartanto of Hartanto Properties was our breakfast guest. As most of us in attendance have been involved in a property transaction of some nature, Eric’s subject was highly informative.

Eric opened his delivery with the theme of explaining the recent history of the Perth property market from 2006 to present day. This allowed us to better understand current property conditions and markets.

Eric linked past economic events such as the mining boom with its resultant population explosion, the slow down during the Covid era followed by a subsequent influx of people from other States who saw WA as a “safe place” to the availability of real estate listings. We could see how world events, even the Ukraine war, can affect the number of properties available for sale.

While we all enjoyed this warm and relatable delivery from Eric, his next and perhaps even more relevant topic was preparing for your next move.

He gave us the reasons for choosing the right real estate agent, who should also be able to offer the buyer off market homes which have not yet been listed; the best times to buy and sell your home, and the importance of seriously considering the first offer to purchase and possible consequences of rejecting it.

The success of any speaker is measured by the number of questions asked by members, coupled by exchanging business cards and requests for photos of the speaker with members.

From my observations after the meeting with members wanting to introduce themselves to Eric and still wanting to ask more questions, his presentation was extremely informative and enjoyable.

Born in Manchester, I migrated to Perth in 1971 as a classic “ten-pound Pom” with my fiancée Linda, chasing opportunity and adventure. Trained as a Hydraulic Systems Designer, I began my Australian career with Western Mining at the Kwinana Nickel Refinery before moving into the f luid power industry with Malcolm Moore in Guildford. In 1979, together with two colleagues, he co-founded Pressure Dynamics in Western Australia.
