Speaker:  Ben Geurts - Therapy dogs and PTSD

Ben has spent over 20 years in the military, including several with the Military Police and from there got into dog handling.  He spent 15 years in the RAAF training dogs, and he also advises the WA Police on their dog training.
He is currently working with ex servicemen with PTSD in a project funded by the RSL and the government, training four “stress free” dogs and their eventual owners, who are all veterans.  His aim is to use the dogs to get the veterans out of bed in the morning, and give them a purpose in their lives.  The dogs are getting ready to take the Public Access Test which will enable the vets to take their dogs on taxis, trains and buses.

Guest Speaker:  Kay Eva - Stitches of Hope Update

Applecross Rotary was pleased to receive a grant from Volunteering WA and LotteryWest to host 2 events during National Volunteer week, 19-25 May.

Tuesday's Breakfast Meeting will be our first event and we will be joined by Kay Eva, a long-term Rotarian to update us on the “Stitches of Hope” program, an outstanding and long-term initiative assisting the homeless.

We will then host a morning tea on Thursday May 22nd at Mount Henry Bridge Park. This will allow us to recognise the contribution made by Applecross Rotary, through long time member John Henderson, to the park’s new water feature as part of a recent upgrade. It is these quiet contributions made through the time and effort of volunteering that have such a significant impact on the community. We are proud to be part of this fantastic week and to recognize the many great volunteers in our community.

He has pioneered a humanitarian project in East Sumba, Indonesia, in an area which receives very little government funding, because it is not a tourism spot, and only has a 5% Muslim population.  Malaria is still rife, with dengue and TB very prevalent.

Foodbank presentation and update

Jul 29, 2025 7:30 am

Applecross Rotary proudly supports FoodBank WA.  Recently the club donated $5000 to help Foodbank fight hunger throughout Western Australia.  This amount recognises the great partnership we have with the residents at Riverside Apartments led by resident and PP George Mavros through the funds received from their Containers For Change donations over a number of years. The residents have a very active social calenderwink
